Galadriel- WIP Drawing

Today I thought I'd post the WIP of one of my favorite drawings. Galadriel is an elvish queen who is portrayed by Cate Blanchette in in Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" and "Hobbit" movie trilogies. Galadriel is the original character of JRR Tolkien.

I employed the use of pens, markers, and prisms color pencils.

The first has a Harry Potter quote and the second one a poem from the Lord of the Ring.

Poem- Fictitious Fancies

I have no words that glow

No tales of ringing steel

I have no loom of foresight

No worlds that are surreal

The portal through the wardrobe

Has closed itself to me

My companion who could run

Has run at last from me

I lost my magic ring

It fell through time and space

It crashed into a mountain

At silver warp speed pace

It takes imagination

To make a dream alive

It takes a leap of daring

To take dreams to the sky

I have no right to do

what I have seen been done

Instead I have the privilege

Desolation of Smaug Midnight Premiere

A year ago, fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy were left in suspense at the end of

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey."

A year later the joyous time has come upon us once more where Tolkien nerds can weep and laugh in joy at their pain being appeased at last. No more agony! We have the movie we've been waiting a year for! Everybody run around and celebrate!!!

Last Friday I was unbelievable and bizarrely thrilled to see the midnight premiere of "The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug." My first ever midnight premiere. For a movie related to my favorite books in all of this world. :D

This isn't a review, that would require too many spoilers which I don't want to give so soon after its release, and my view is too biased to be an honest reference point for the entire thing.

I will say I loved it. There were so many things I disagreed with (those of you who have read the book(s) will sympathize) but the more I've had time to relax and think about it the more I enjoyed it.

The picture below is a legit airplane that that they have in New Zealand. That place goes crazy this time of year concerning the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies. Postage stamps, coins, they have the set of Hobbiton in permanent residence there along with the Green Dragon... Honestly New Zealand is the closest thing we'll ever get to Middle Earth I think except for in our dreams and our imaginative reading endeavors.

Sketchbook #1

I've been working in my sketchbook all of December.

Alas I haven't been posting as much as I would've liked; life has been charging along with its usual energy. :)

I hope everyone has been enjoying their holiday season. Where I am we've had a decent fall of snow (at last!) though the forecast is threatening to send it away.

Here are some excerpts from my sketchbook. :)

I decided to draw a calendar and then fill it in with dates in
no particular order.

I punched holes in several pages to add texture. :)

For one of my classes I get to write a short story. :D

I have a couple excerpts from different stories I'm considering. There's just too many possibilities!

The first one... is based in an established world already that I've created.

The second one is made up of what I have going on in my head. Numbers and stone statues.

“What about… The Stealers?” Garrett gulped down more of the tonic. “It’s got a mysterious feel to it, like the shadows.”

“But it’s so obvious.” Tuney groaned. “What do we do? We steal stuff. If the idea is to not get caught let’s not name ourselves with the crime before we commit it.”

The statue didn’t move.

Tony could’ve hugged the statue’s pedestal in relief. Then the shock of what that implied sank in.

“It’s finally over.” He took a deep breath and turned to Syrie. “Can you believe it?”

Syrie shook her head. Her voice whispered through his mind. No. But I know that it is. It’s not like last time. However you of all people know that knowing is different than actually believing…

Tony stepped over to the statue’s pedestal and slid down the still warm stone. He touched the words engraved in their neat little rows. Above the lengthy paragraph was the title: The Queen.

Tony and Syrie each studied the stone chunks scattered around them. There was a wing (from a very talkative griffin), an arm, the remains of The Queen and pieces too badly battered to discern what they had been originally.

Syrie pulled out her pen, the one that had lead for ink, and wrote on the pedestal: The 37^th War. Year 2073. The Queen has fallen. Survivors Tony Derk and Syrena Tome.

We remember.

Sketch- magical beings

Heyloeth guys,

It's sketchy Tuesday. While watching The Hobbit (again, yes) I worked on a couple pen sketches which I colored with Prismacolor pencils.

Freehand. I used reference photos for their poses. Their arms and hands are definitely strange, but I still like these little pieces. :)

Sketch- Staff/Dragons

I played with the staff... I like it better this way! :)

It's that It's that happy time of the week where I share a sketch/s. :D

Today we have a staff that was inspired by Radagast's staff as portrayed in The Hobbit. And a couple of dragons just because dragons are cool.

The surge of fantasy stuff is probably due to the new Hobbit trailer that was released today. I have no words to properly express my happiness.

PS... Happy October everyone. It's now officially Autumn in the eyes of my family.

PPS... In respect to the emotionally compromised John Watson, we will do our very best to refrain from saying the word "Fall."

Sketch- Thorin

Today is Tuesday!

Each Tuesday I will try to post a sketch of some kind, old or new. :)

Tonight I sat down and attempted to draw Thorin freehand, with a pen.

In an odd way, it went better than expected, and worse than I would've liked. :P Now someday I'm going to have to sit down for a whole week and come out with a super detailed portrait of Thorin to make myself feel better, but for now this'll do for Tuesday's post.

I added some special effects, which isn't the idea of posting a "simple" sketch, but it does look cooler. ^_^ His facial shape is not correct, and his mouth doesn't carry the right emotion...

No no no... this is a sketch. This was an experiment in the first place, I had no planning beforehand, I had a pen and went with it. I was trying to play with the crosshatching method. For something I don't do often, it went alright.

What do you guys think?

For non-Tolkien fans - Thorin Oakenshield is a character created by JRR Tolkien and is a major character in The Hobbit. What you see here was done from a reference photo of Thorin as portrayed by Richard Armitage in Peter Jackson's film (soon to be) trilogy, The Hobbit.

Hobbit Day

HAPPY HOBBIT DAY EVERYONE!!! :)

I'm watching The Hobbit tonight and I came out with this fun sketch.

I used bronze, gold, and silver sharpie with black pen, unfortunately the different colors don't come across in the picture. The font is in Bilbo's style of handwriting.

The sword represents the symbol in both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit that connects Bilbo and Frodo. The hobbit door is encircled with a gold ring. ;)

The illustrations reflect the beginning, climax, and end of both of their journeys (The Shire with Gandalf, Sauron/Smaug with a mountain of some kind, the Grey Havens).

It might not be legible in the picture, but I write "Home is behind... The world ahead."

And now a picture of Thorin. :) despite the fact it isn't his birthday, I have to say something about him. <3

Every Friday or Thursday, depending on my the happenings in my fascinating world, I will try to share a piece of my writing with an illustration. Anything from a poem, short short story, or just ramblings.
 

Life Drenched Stars 

Let us bide our time
in empty windows
in shafts of time 

Let us watch for love
in all its glory
before it fades away 

Let us gaze upon ice
and falling stars
In hollowly stained skies 

Let us dream of them
with moonlight in their skin
and Life drenched upon their faces

This was inspired by a talk with a friend and influenced a bit by The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. A beautiful book. The illustration was created from a drawing of mine from over a year ago.

Pixlr- Online Photo Editor

I've discovered a delightful photo editing program. For free, online. They offer apps for your phone also but I have yet to try those. If they're as fun as the online programs then I'd love to have them.

The photo editor, Pixlr, has 3 different editors: Advanced, Efficient, and Playful. I chose to go with Playful tonight.

Advanced offers you the chance to start from a blank canvas, choose your dimensions, etc. while Efficient has the option of creating a collage with the ability to change all of the sizes of the pictures to your exact specifications.

Playful allows you to add effects and borders from a vast variety of choices. Vintage, classic, city, snazzy, girly, faded, etc. You can spend hours just clicking through all of them and mixing styles because all of them look good. :)

Two Steps From Hell was my inspirational music. Heavy and dramatic.

First Experiment- a drawing of mine. This is drawn from the cover of "The Children of Hurin" by JRR Tolkien, illustrated by Alan Lee. I do not own this character, or the illustration. I drew this for my pleasure and out of my admiration for all things Tolkien.

I love the mix of textures and color in "After1" though the spiderweb in the corner almost spoils the "cool/fantasy" effect.

In "After2" I get the feeling he's looking into a fire, or is about to enter something fierce and terrifying like a war. Considering this particular characters story, that might be the most accurate message.

Second Experiment- Next I took a piece from my photography stash, the flower was already blue and the background was solid black from previous edits. I decided to take it a step further. I really really like this one.

This was all for fun, because I love to mess around with creations even after I've scratched and shaded and erased them to almost perfection.
